Original artwork by Bushra Gill
2026
Acrylic on canvas
24 × 24 × 1.5 inches

Inspired by the golden poppies that emerge along California roads each spring, this work explores the hidden systems of connection found within the natural world. Small, repeated forms accumulate into a larger image, creating a rhythmic surface that shifts between abstraction and recognition as the viewer moves closer or farther away.

Drawing from Islamic geometric patterns, the artist uses tessellation, layering, and repetition to create a sense of visual order while deliberately allowing breaks and imperfections to disrupt it. Each individual element contributes to—and has the ability to alter—the whole. Through this interplay of pattern and variation, the work considers flowers not only as symbols of beauty and renewal, but as reminders of interdependence and the unseen structures that connect us to one another and the world around us.
